Guide to Sotogrande

Sotogrande is the most Southerly tourist resort on the Southern Costa del Sol.

Interestingly, the nearest airport is just across the border in Gibraltar and not Malaga. The airport is only fifteen minutes drive away by car from the resort, while Malaga International Airport which is the larger will take you about an hour to reach by car.

Sotogrande is regarded as a “posh upmarket resort” with a pretty marina, beaches and golf courses. It has approximately 12 km of beaches, with spectacular views of the Rock of Gibraltar and across to Africa. You will also find a popular port and marina and a world class golf course which along the Costa Del Golf is quite an achievement.

The Annual polo event (El Torneo Internacional) is held in August at The Santa Maria Polo Club. The event attracts a host of wealthy rich and famous people from all over the world which of course boosts Sotogrande’s reputation. Get your glad rags on if you are going to head up there and mingle with the in-crowd.

A huge positive as with all of the Coast is the beautiful weather and climate in Sotogrande. For those who love the sun the summers are very hot indeed and also benefit however from mild winters.

Sotogrande is great for entertainment and nightlife. The town boasts a number of fine restaurants as well as more casual bars and cafes. Many people head to the Port area which of course has the marina with lots of luxury yachts berthing there, a good people watching spot!

Property prices in this area are higher than other resorts along the Coast. You can get perhaps secure a villa around 400,000 euros right up to the high end of the market where a more substantial villa would could cost millions of euros. There are 2-bedroomed apartments in the 275,000 euros price range or again higher prices depending on which part of the area they located in and what the property specifications are.

As mentioned, Sotogrande is very close to Gibraltar and many people live here and actually do the commute over the border to work in Gibraltar. Also a lot of families take the opportunity to put their children into the very good Sotogrande International School, which is known to be one of the best on the Costa del Sol.

Sotogrande is an upmarket affluent area and not for everyone. However the exclusivity of the area and exceptional properties are highly sought after and demand often outstrips supply.
